Charles C. Mayfield

As a youth, it was fascinating to watch my father working in his shop.  A gunsmith by trade, he  meticulously shaped both wood and metal to create custom firearms.  It was there that I learned to love working with my hands, and also developed an appreciation for fine craftsmanship.

My formal study of woodworking and furniture design began at Brigham Young University and was continued at North Texas State University.  I completed my schooling by earning a Masters degree in Industrial Technology with a minor in Interior Design from the University of North Texas.

While in college, I worked in several conventional cabinet shops as well as apprenticing as a violin maker. Later, I broadened my woodworking skills designing and building horse drawn sleighs and carriages for Carriage Works in Klamath Falls, Oregon.  I became a professional woodworker in 1988 and soon after, I started my own business creating custom furniture.

Mayfield Woodworking operated in Denton, Texas for 22 years producing fine furniture and other specialty wood projects.

I continue to study new furniture design trends and woodworking techniques, as well as to research period furniture and traditional construction methods. While in Texas, I served as adjunct faculty for the University of North Texas teaching the History of Furniture (an upper level class required for Interior Design majors).

Currently I teach woodworking at Casper College in beautiful Wyoming and continue to do limited custom projects.

Best regards,
Charles C. Mayfield
